The National High School BBQ Association (NHBBQ) is redefining what student competition looks like by blending culinary arts with leadership and teamwork. As a unique Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO), NHSBBQ creates opportunities for students to develop real-world skills through the universal language of food.
We are proud to share that the Culinary Institute Lenotre is an official partner of NHSBBQ. Through this partnership, our school had the opportunity to field a team, allowing students to step into the competitive BBQ arena and gain hands-on, real-world experience.
What sets HSBBQ apart is its dynamic, competitive-driven format. Rather than a traditional classroom setting, students step into the fast-paced world of professional barbecue. Events are modeled after elite circuits like the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), giving participants a true taste of industry standards and expectations.
At the heart of the experience is “The Slab,” an exciting one-day competition where students fire up their pits and put their skills to the test. Competitors are challenged to prepare and present a range of BBQ favorites, including chicken, ribs, brisket or tri-tip, along with a grilled dessert and a classic side dish such as beans or potato salad.
Beyond the smoke and flavor, HSBBQ fosters confidence, collaboration, and career readiness. It offers a competitive platform for students who may not gravitate toward traditional sports, empowering them to shine in a different arena—one where passion, precision, and creativity take the spotlight.
At the Culinary Institute Lenotre, we are committed to providing our students with opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, and our involvement with NHSBBQ is just one example of how we bring industry-relevant experiences to life
